Celebrating the Gift of Trees

We are thrilled to host this Tree Giveaway in partnership with the Lake Michigan Bird Observatory and just in time for Arbor Day.

“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

More than 150 years ago marks a day of celebration in Nebraska that is said to have inspired the planting of more than 1 million trees. This date, the first Arbor Day, would later have the ripple effect to establish it as an official holiday in all 50 states.

Holding onto that tradition, the most common date for National Arbor Day observance is the last Friday in April, according to the Arbor Day Foundation’s website. Not all climates are the same, so a number of state Arbor Days run from January in the south to May in the far north, to coincide with the best tree planting weather.

Here in Wisconsin, we celebrate trees on that traditional date. In fact, Arbor Day is not the only way we are appreciating the climate this month – with several holidays on the horizon:

  • Earth Day: Wednesday, April 22
  • Arbor Day: Friday, April 24
  • Forest Appreciation Week: Monday-Friday, April 20-24

We are excited to invite the public to our Tree Giveaway on Saturday, April 18 – just in time for these celebrations, in partnership with Lake Michigan Bird Observatory (LMBO). The trees chosen are all native trees that support species like Luna moths, Pileated Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, Cecropia moths and Eastern Bluebirds!

Below find resources available about the species and how to best care for a newly planted new. Even if you are unable to attend our giveaway, these offer an idea of great trees to choose for your yard. Also, consider signing up for a free yard consult with LMBO for recommendations tailored specific to your space.
